We're sad to announce that Marianne Clauw has resigned as Executive Director of Friends of CASA of Washtenaw County, effective November 4th. We thank her for her years of dedicated service and leadership and wish her all the best in her future endeavors!

Cheri Dunn and Julie Dunbar will be co-directors on an interim basis, until a new permanent director is appointed.

November is National Adoption Month

November is National Adoption Month, a time to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. This year's initiative focuses on building capacity of adoption professionals to recruit and retain parents for the 107,000 children and youth waiting for permanent families in the U.S. foster care system.

Every November, a Presidential Proclamation launches activities and celebrations to help build awareness of adoption throughout the nation. Thousands of community organizations arrange and host programs, events, and activities to share positive adoption stories, challenge the myths, and draw attention to the thousands of children in foster care who are waiting for permanent families.

Five Steps Toward Improving the Foster Care System

1. Keep children with their families whenever possible. Easier said than done, but hundreds of thousands of young people are away from their families for causes that are not being adequately addressed in our society. They include poverty, marginalization and resulting factors such as substance abuse and mental illness. Until we more successfully address social conditions that are hurtful to all of us, children will be living out the consequences.

2. Be compassionate with parents. What does it take for you to accept help from others? Most of us would agree that we must trust someone before we are able to accept their help. Change takes time, and delays are not always due to a lack of desire. Our biases can inhibit our empathy for parents and the challenges they face, but it helps to think of the difficulties we ourselves face when trying to make changes in our own lives.

3. Research existing relationships to get children out of foster care as quickly as possible. We want children to return to their families as soon as possible. If they cannot return home, we want to move them out of limbo and into relational, physical and legal permanency. In other words, we want them to have someone they can count on, a place to call home and people they can claim—and who claim them—as family. Experience shows us that people who are known to our children are often the people who will provide them with permanency.

4. Meet children where they are. Some young people are angry with their parents and the world in general. They have not been protected and cared for the way children are entitled to be. That is why taking a “no-fault” approach is essential. Most youth experience sadness, despair and anger. Youth express these emotions through tantrums, school difficulties, running away, getting involved with gangs or using drugs. These are fairly normative responses to what they have gone through. Their behaviors may leave us feeling frustrated and hopeless about their futures. But we must maintain hope—because many of our children have lost it.

5. Make decisions and implement them as though the child were a member of your own family. Time does not move quickly for children when they are away from their families and living in a state of uncertainty. High caseloads and the bureaucracy of the system make it difficult to make things happen as quickly as we would hope. We will not always be able to address the needs of the children we serve as quickly as we want. That is why CASA programs are critical and influential assets in the child welfare system. Magical things happen for children when someone gives them a voice.

Anything But Ordinary...A CASA Kid Gets to Play

How many times have you passed a soccer field on an autumn Saturday and seen the kids running back and forth, the parents chatting with each other while they watch the game, the coaches calling out directions? Just an ordinary part of suburban life.

For one of our CASA kids, that experience is anything but ordinary. Katie* is fourteen, and is living in her third residential (institutional) placement in the past three years. In 2008, her adoptive family returned her to the custody of the state. They could not deal with her emotional issues, the debris caused by a childhood of neglect and abuse. In social services parlance, it was a “broken adoption”. In 2010, the Washtenaw County Juvenile Court referee asked for a CASA to be assigned to Katie.

It took a year to find a CASA who was able to make the 166-mile round trip to visit Katie every week or two. (Over 20% of our CASA kids live outside Washtenaw County because of the lack of foster homes and residential facilities.)

In early 2011, a CASA stepped forward.

She has been a vital advocate for Katie, and is making sure that she experiences some of the activities of an ordinary childhood. This fall, Katie is playing on a travel soccer team in her community, due to the efforts and persistence of her CASA. The CASA Cinderella Fund** has paid for Katie’s registration, her uniform, and a new soccer ball. We thank this CASA, and all the other CASAs who work so hard for their CASA kids. They are anything but ordinary.

Please welcome our 2011 Fall class of CASA Advocates!

Six community members completed 40 hours of classroom training and courtroom observation facilitated by CASA coordinator Ava Adler and CASA supervisor, Virginia Harmon.

After completing training, CASA volunteers become sworn officers of the court, and conduct their advocacy duties within the boundaries of a court order.

Our CASA volunteers are appointed by referee Molly Schikora to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children in Washtenaw County, to make sure they don't get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system or languish in inappropriate group or foster homes. Advocates stay with each case until it is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. For many of our youth, their CASA volunteer will be the one constant adult presence in their lives.

Greetings CASA family!

My name is Silvia Raithel, and this semester I have been interning at the White House.

I would like to share with you a little bit about the White House Internship Program and about my experiences as an intern. The White House Internship Program is a public service leadership program. I have been placed in the Office of Presidential Personnel (PPO); this office administers the selection process for Presidential appointees.

The work that I have been doing in this capacity has been extremely interesting and has taught me a lot, but it has only been a small part of the Internship experience. Walking down the halls each day – and working in the different offices – are some of the world’s most successful people. What can be learned simply by observing the way that they react to situations, or simply by having a conversation with them, is invaluable, and can be life-changing.

Also an important part of the Internship experience, is public service. Each White House Intern gets assigned a public service project, and some of us do additional volunteering on top of that. During my time here, I have sorted food at a food bank, volunteered at a soup kitchen, tutored high school students, and spent my Saturday working with children on developing iphone apps. These experiences have made me a more empathetic, caring, and creative person, and have thus contributed greatly to my development as a person.

Having been here in Washington D.C. for several months now, I can say that it has been an honor to play a small role in the Obama Administration alongside so many motivated and exceptional people. A year ago today, I would not have wagered to ever find myself here, yet alone so soon. Applying for the White House Internship Program was more of a whim than a part of a plan for me, as I knew that the application process was one of the most selective for internships anywhere. Evidently, even long shots can pan out, however, and I would like to encourage others to take this one as well.

The interns themselves come from all walks of life. Some here, like me, are still working on their undergraduate degrees. Others have completed their graduate work. Many have focused their education on political science or policy. But others have a background in various sciences, medicine, mathematics, or other fields in the liberal arts. We represent most geographic areas in the United States, and a wide variety of ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

If you are passionate about anything, then I would say to you that you have nothing to lose by applying to be a White House Intern. If, as a CASA, you have advocated for a child who has an ambition to make a change in the world, and he or she has now graduated from high school, then I would ask you to say the same thing to them. This Administration – and this internship – is a great place to begin changing the world by learning how it can be done. When applying for Board Fellow programs, I was drawn to Friends of CASA because of the benefit CASAs provide to Washtenaw youth. Working with the Board has been a great experience and reaffirms my interest to work in the nonprofit field in the future.

Tell us a little bit about your previous Work and/or Volunteer Experience and/or your Education:

Prior to starting at Ross, I spent over two years in Ghana as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Following my Peace Corps experience, I traveled around the world for 6 months. During my three years abroad, I was exposed to a number of nonprofit organizations and noticed that many do as much harm as they do good. I am now pursuing a dual degree, with an MS in Natural Resources and Environment as well as an MBA with concentrations in Social Enterprise and Strategy.

Hobbies/Fun Facts about Yourself:

I've played soccer all of my life and loved being able to play in countries around the world when I was unable to communicate in any other way.

Before attending Ross, I worked in marketing research in Chicago and was a member of the Junior Board for the non-profit organization Boys Hope Girls Hope of Illinois. I am now pursuing my MBA to develop my career in Marketing.

Michigan CASA Story

On August 22, 2006, our lives changed! I did something I never do - I changed my office message noting that I would be at another building for the day rather than just picking up voicemail messages at the end of the day.

That afternoon, I received a call from our licensing worker asking if I would consider taking three children and doing an emergency license increase. They had a sibling group who was going to have to be split up. My son, then 15, agreed to share his room with K who was 4.5 years old, B age 3.5, and M, who was 6.5, joined our family the next day.

It was the oddest thing feeling. A van pulled into our driveway. Our caseworker opened the side door of the van and their sat three tiny little people. B had fallen asleep on the twenty minute trip to our home and the tears hadn’t yet dried. I was terrified, they were terrified, and as a first time foster mom, I had no idea what a journey we were going to embark upon.

The kids were going to be with us just a short time. Mom and Dad were separated, with Mom living with an abusive boyfriend. Dad was in jail. It was felt that once he was free that he would quickly regain custody. I was naïve and wasn’t sure I should buy Christmas presents!

Within a few days of the kids arriving, we had our first visit from our CASA who had been working on the case prior to them coming into formal care.

As the days became weeks, it became apparent that these kids who were nearly 40 years younger than I am had more life experience then I do. Kids, who the first time you asked them to drag over the toy box to do a toy sort asked if it was time to sell their toys. Kids who seemed to always announce things such as "I really like it that you cook the hotdogs" while in a crowded grocery store; or yell when Daddy gets out of jail in Target! They began to grow and thrive.

Visits with our CASA continued, typically each Sunday afternoon. As the kids began to relax, it became apparent that secrets were being kept. Behaviors began to escalate, and, as October came to a close, the Judge ordered visitation suspended. By December, we were down at CAN council trying to determine if the kids could provide credible testimony to see their biological parents arrested abuse. In early winter, our family court Judge was giving notice that TPR proceedings would be started soon. In May, TPR occurred, and in January of 2008, it was upheld.

During this time, it took an entire team of people to support these three little people. M started kindergarten nearly two years late. B and K started pre-school.

On February 4, 2008, we became a legal family. Many days continue to be a struggle. When necessary, I can list the alphabet soup that is linked to each of them in some combination: PTSD, survivor of SA, ODD, RAD, FAS. Thankfully, we have days when they are simply growing children who laugh, play and bicker like brothers and sisters do. On the rough days, when they are being sent home from school, I try to take a deep breath and remember that a village let these children down when they were infants. The safety net didn’t help their biological mother who was pregnant at 15 and married to her 24 year old “husband” to keep him out of jail.

I regularly remind school officials, our therapist and our psychiatrist, as well as our friends and family that they are part of our village. All of us need to work together to do the best job we can to see that these three are productive members of our collective society. I am pleased that after the initial shock, most adults have indeed stepped up to help rather than judge.

To each of you who read this and are part of the safety net of a child or group of children I thank you. No role is more important than helping to raise productive children, who feel safe.

In December, 2010, Ian S., a CASA of Washtenaw County volunteer, took his CASA kid, Josh, to the Extreme Monster Truck Nationals Event at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan. The Palace made available tickets to events that were taking place around Thanksgiving. After the event, Josh wrote the following note to Ian & Friends of CASA:

2010 Michigan CASA Conference

The conference was great. It was called a “Legacy of One” and honored Pat Wagner, the previous executive director of Michigan CASA who passed away in April, 2010. The intention was to emphasize her years of incredible work and dedication not only to Michigan CASA but to the child welfare community as a whole. Pat was responsible for serving as “the wind beneath the wings” of at least 20 county programs in the State which were started and nurtured under her tenure. The advocate of the year award was re-named the “Patricia Wagner Volunteer of the Year”.

The conference was held in Grand Rapids @ The Crown Plaza Hotel and about 160 people were in attendance. Workshop topics included Native American Children and Families in State Court, Conflict Resolution Skills for CASA Volunteers, Fundraising - Art or Science, a panel of older foster care children “aging out of the system”, trauma informed assessments of children in the child welfare system and more.

The CASA of Washtenaw County volunteers who attended left inspired and invigorated, ready to re-face the challenges of their cases. And, both Gini Harmon and Jan Nyman won raffle baskets in the annual raffle of county created baskets which rasied over $2,000 to offset conference costs.

We are looking forward to sending a contingent to the National CASA Conference, March 19-22, 2011. It will take place in Chicago and is called “Building Hope for Youth”.

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Political Science. I worked for UofM as a non-profit recruitment coordinator until the birth of my daughter. After my first child was born, I became a full-time stay-at home mom. Now, I spend my time volunteering for various organizations that benefit foster children, I’m the Treasurer/Secretary of the PTO at my children’s school, and I volunteer in their classrooms.

My husband Jason and I have a 7 year old daughter named Samantha and a 5 year old son named Kyle. I love yoga, reading, and history.

Local CASA Success Story

I am a recently licensed foster mother in Washtenaw County and have had the great pleasure of working with Kathy P. who is the CASA for my new foster son. I wanted to reach out to all of you because I think it’s important for leaders to know about successes as much as they are notified when problems arise.

As I learned more about the CASA program and worked with Kathy, it became clear to me that she was modeling the CASA core values each and every moment. She has been and remains a vital team member in my child’s case.

I will not digress into the details of this particular case, but I can assure you that I am convinced that without Kathy, things would not have worked out and gone as smoothly as they have. She is truly only interested in the child’s highest good and has kept fiercely to that path and been a voice for him in times of great turmoil. She has developed key relationships and I’ve seen various other team members stop and take note of her voice, which then resulted in a key change in direction or a return to the path.

The CASA program is a fine example of a public/private partnership and Kathy P. is one of your shining stars.

This week, long-time CASA supporter and former Board Member Jennifer Patselas photographed six of our CASA advocates for our upcoming screening of "The Blind Side" in recognition of May as National Foster Care Month.

Jennifer was able to capture the true essence of a CASA advocate in the setting where it all happens - the courtroom. Her portraits will be displayed in the lobby of the Michigan Theater on May 20th during our event and benefit screening.

We are very grateful to Jennifer for coming forward with the idea to donate portraits to CASA. In the next month, she will also be photographing some of our high school youth who may not be able to afford senior pictures. She has offered to donate a generous packet of photos to each senior as well as a 90-minute photographing session. What a gift to our kids! We can't thank you enough, Jennifer--for your time, your artistry, your generosity and your care.

Remembering Nancy Abinojar (1957-2010)

We have some sad news to report. Nancy Abinojar, a CASA volunteer since 2005, died on January 18th, after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She was a life-long resident of Ann Arbor and brought to our program her knowledge of, and history with, our community.

She graduated from and was employed by the University of Michigan, initially in the Department of Women's Studies. Eventually, she became the office manager at the new National Center for Institutional Diversity.

She grew up as one of the only Filipino American families living in Ann Arbor in the 1950s and 1960s. Her father, born in 1908, was also a U of M grad and they were both highlighted in the Filipino American History Project of Michigan.

Nancy worked on two cases with our CASA program, taking a leave of absence when she first became ill, but returning to her advocacy work when her health improved.

She will be missed.

Child Maltreatment 2008 Report

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS's) Administration for Children and Families has published a report: Child Maltreatment 2008.

The report, the latest in an annual series issued each April in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, indicates that 2008 saw the lowest child victimization rate in five years. An estimated 772,000 children were victims of child abuse and neglect, a rate of 10.3 per 1,000 children, with almost a third of the victims less than four years old.

Cultural Competence and Diversity

In an effort to promote cultural competency and diversity within the Washtenaw County Trial Courts CASA Program, a committee was formed made up of CASA volunteers and staff and community members who could help inform us in this arena. We met in December and January and came up with a plan aimed at both increasing the diversity of our volunteer pool and improving the training we offer in cultural competency.

Participants included two volunteer advocates (Venkat L. and Grace W.), Patricia Doty-White from the Alpha Wives organization, Pat Horne-McGee, director of the Washtenaw County Head Start Program, Donna Huntsman, Executive Director of Friends of CASA and Ava Adler, CASA Coordinator. The group brainstormed about organizations and events where we could do outreach for both volunteer recruitment and community education. Some of these included the University of Michigan Women of Color Task Force, African-American Fraternities and Sororities through their service clubs, Links, Inc (a volunteer organization of professional women of color and the church community.

We also identified the Eastern Michigan University School of Social Work and Education as a resource for a diversity curriculum and discussed some specific books and movies which could be used as part of that.

A list of contact people was generated and our next step will be to communicate with them and offer to do a presentation to their organization about CASA and the serious problem of neglect and abuse in our community.

I worked as a teacher through Teach for America for two years on the South Side of Chicago before returning to school at Stanford University and earning a Masters degree in Education Policy. After working for a few years in Palo Alto doing Education Policy research, I decided to attend business school at the University of Michigan in the hopes of one day being able to reform an entire school district.

Our own “Good Voodoo Queen” Patricia Doty-White

Walt Disney’s newest animation film, “The Princess and the Frog” is an American fairy tale inspiring young girls everywhere! The movie is set during the Jazz Age in the French Quarter of New Orleans with a star-studded cast. But what really makes this movie standout is the main character, Princess Tiana, the first African-American Disney princess, played by the actress Anika Noni Rose.

In the movie, a prince named Naveen is transformed into a frog by the evil voodoo magician Dr. Facilier. The frog prince mistakes a girl named Tiana for a princess and has her kiss him to break the spell. The kiss does not break the spell, and instead turns Tiana into a frog as well. The two of them must reach the good voodoo queen of the deepest, darkest part of the Bayou, Mama Odie, for help.

At Friends of CASA, we have discovered our own good voodoo queen, Patricia Doty-White.

Patricia has inspired five of our girls to visualize themselves as

princesses deserving the best this life has to offer. She has set a high standard for academic achievement while bringing big smiles and lots of hope to these five, young, African-American girls. Patricia presented each girl with her own tiara and a movie gift card to see the film with their CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate).

We are blessed to have such a wonderful supporter and a true believer that these kids deserve so much more out of life.

We had a great turn out at Whole Foods Market on Washtenaw Avenue. Whole Foods Market generously donated 5% of total sales raising $4,508.25 for Friends of CASA.

THANK YOU to everyone for your support and commitment to our CASA kids.

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces shopping and supporting the most vulnerable population in our community – our CASA children who have suffered from abuse and neglect. “I forwarded the email reminder to all my co-workers,” I was told multiple times by donors and volunteers alike. And, it worked! Thank you for spreading the word and recruiting individuals unfamiliar with CASA to lend their support for the day.

It was a great way to bring attention and awareness to child abuse in our community. We had four individuals request more information on becoming a CASA advocate and several more interested in joining our mailing list.

I started my own Financial Practice in Ann Arbor about 5 years ago, which includes tax preparation, accounting, and other financial services. I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, then attended Colorado State University, and returned to Ann Arbor about 6 years ago. I have coached baseball at the high school level well as some very successful youth baseball teams. I enjoy working with working with kids and making a difference in the local community.

This year we traded in the red, white, and blue umbrella for a really (awesome) CASA tent. We enlisted the help of our attention-seeking "Forgotten Children" and fitted our table with a CASA tablecloth - which kindly doubled as a blanket for Angie (Friends of CASA board member) and me on Saturday morning.

While we didn't end up selling tickets for our Rockin' the CASA event, the save-the-date cards caught everyone's attention. Thank you, Cheri!! They are so fabulous! We recruited some volunteers and several more were interested in joining our mailing list for more information on CASA.

While I didn't get the opportunity to meet everyone who volunteered for the Art Fair, those I met were outstanding. I must extend a special thanks to Lakshmi (CASA volunteer) - Thank you for holding down the fort when the promised Art Fair storm hit.

I admit I'm sorta new to the nonprofit world, though I've been interested in it for some time. I'm not sure why I'm surprised by how great everyone is, but I guess it's because I haven't been somewhere before where everyone is really just so genuine and great. It's amazing. And I love it. I just admire and am so proud to get on board with the spirit of this work. The spirit of all the volunteers. And the spirit of the cause.

Local CASA Volunteer's Success Story

I was given my first case in February of this year a family of three children: A 13-year-old boy with mild autism, a 9-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old, all living with a Great Grandmother (74 years old).

The children have lived with their great grandmother for 4 years. There were so many questions that needed to be answered and I found that I had the time to find those answers. The lawyers, and social workers all cared for the family but lacked the time to get to know the family as well as I could.

I found, for example, that the 13-year-old boy had missed 54 days of school and had been late for his first hour class 34 times. There were several reasons, and all were easy to fix.

He needed an alarm clock, needed to stop spending the night at his favorite Aunt's house, and needed to take responsibility. I told him he was not allowed to be late or miss school anymore. I was able to check daily via a computer how his grades were and his attendance, and so was he.

From that day on, he has not missed a day of school and is on time. His Great Grandmother needed some help also with her insurance and finding the programs that would help the children and her. I had the time to help her. The little sister needed to be in an outside activity, and with Ava's (CASA supervisor) help, she is now playing baseball; she loves it and they are winning every game! The little sister will also be going to a two-week YMCA summer camp and is so eager to go.

All this family needed was someone that had some time to help with a few issues. With CASA, the possibilities are endless. I had the support of their social workers, lawyer, and Ava. I also had the training that prepared me and the on-going seminars and meetings that support me.

It has been my privilege to be in this family's life and to be a CASA volunteer.

The room was a buzz. You could feel the excitement, the anticipation. Something big was about to take place…

Imagine being in a room with 1,400 devoted CASA supporters. Some are board members, some are volunteers, some are staff…but everyone is a child advocate. Those in attendance are from all over…Florida, Tennessee, New Jersey, Alaska, and Arkansas. Forty-eight states are represented. You look around the room and you can see a unique blend of people sharing their diverse backgrounds, accents and experiences.

Suddenly, everyone jumps to their feet and begin to applaud and holler as Dr. Phil and his wife Robin walk into the banquet hall.

This was my experience at the 2009 National CASA Conference – Taking advocacy to a higher level. The conference was held over four days, April 25-28th, in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Phil McGraw, the host of the very successful syndicated daytime talk show DR. PHIL, and his wife Robin McGraw, were invited to give the key note address. They spoke to the need of getting every child in foster care a CASA volunteer. They thanked everyone for their commitment and challenged us to recruit 100,000 additional volunteers.

But, most importantly, they spoke of their commitment and desire to help CASA attain the goal of giving every child an advocate, a voice.

…everyone in the banquet hall was standing and applauding as Robin and Dr. Phil stepped off the stage. It was an invigorating experience to surround oneself with passionate people sharing the same belief and cause as you.

On April 7^th, Molly Schikora, Juvenile Court Referee, swore in 9 new CASA volunteers to serve as advocates for children in foster care in Washtenaw County. This is the biggest training class we’ve had in a couple years, and it includes two men, two foster parents and two adoptive parents. It also represents a wide range of interests and occupations including several engineers, an attorney, a phonics teacher, a volunteer church counselor, and an entrepreneur.

Bruce J., Kathleen O., Dean D., Dorcas P., Jean P., Susan S., Linda L., Joyce T. and Renee S. have joined our ranks and are in the process of being oriented to cases. We welcome them to our CASA family, which is growing!!

Earth Day, intended to inspire awareness and appreciation, was the back drop for a brilliant CASA event. Hostesses Betsy McCallister and Kim Kronick decided to call attention to the wonderful work our advocates do on behalf of abused and neglected children here in our own community. Betsy opened her beautiful home to forty people whom were invited to learn more about Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Nancy Kelley, our board president, spoke of the powerful impact one-on-one advocacy and mentorship can have on the life of a child. She spoke of her own experience as an advocate in San Jose, CA and her current work serving on the board of CASA of Washtenaw.

Standing Up for Abused and Neglected Children Takes on a New Meaning

One night, about 10 years ago, I went to bed with a sore back, and woke up in severe pain, not able to move from the waist down. I had suffered a spinal cord injury that left me paralyzed. After a few months of medical treatment there was no real improvement; doctors told me the problem was permanent and I might never walk again. I was 48 years old.

My vigorous life came to a standstill. I went through all the stages most people experience when they're suddenly disabled: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and, finally, acceptance. After four months of intense rehab and much to my health caregivers' surprise, I could maneuver myself around in an upright position using arm crutches. I could, on my own terms, walk.

Prior to the injury, as a "Type A" personality, I had been extremely physically active. I continue to serve with American Red Cross as a volunteer Health and Safety Instructor going on 40 years now. Our family took advantage of New Hampshire's outdoor scene by camping in all seasons, although I particularly enjoyed winter camping - maybe because of my other hobby as a dogsled musher. My profession as an ultrasound engineer also provided me with the opportunity to travel coast-to-coast.

The dogs and dogsled racing had been a very important part of my family's life. I built a hand-lashed racing sled out of white ash. We built a kennel in our backyard -- a big fenced-in area so the Huskies could run and I could wrestle and play with them. That changed after my injury. The dogs sensed something was different and they never jumped on me. Those magnificent animals played a key role in my rehab. After being paralyzed, I literally had to crawl out to the kennel to feed the pack. But I wanted -- needed -- to do that. Eventually, I was able to get back on the dogsled. I strapped myself on with a harness and took my wife for a ride. The dogs seemed to know what my wife and I were going through and we valued their support.
But, in other areas of my life, after two years of not doing much, I realized I needed something else to keep me busy and make me feel needed. I told the big guy upstairs, "I'm ready for something."

Toward the end of 2000, my wife and I attended a Christmas party at a friend's house. I sat down on a couch next to a gentleman who also depended on crutches to get around. He told me he had M.S. (multiple sclerosis). I asked, "What are you doing to keep yourself from going mental?" He said he was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for abused and neglected children. We talked all night. Monday morning I called the local program office, CASA of New Hampshire, to find out more. After an initial, comprehensive, screening interview I signed up for the training.

The 40 hours of CASA training were hard for me because I had to sit all day long -- a painful endeavor. But it captivated me. One morning the instructor showed us a film of children who had been involved in abuse and neglect cases. They spoke of what had happened to them and how their CASAs helped keep them safe and brought change to their lives. The voices of those children were incredibly powerful. That was the moment. I realized this isn't fun and games, and I knew I had to do this work. It was important that I become an advocate for these children and that I do the job well.

When a case of abuse and/or neglect comes into the New Hampshire family court system, judges usually appoint a CASA to serve as a guardian ad litem (GAL), for the life of the case with all the rights and privileges of a principal in the case. As a Court Appointed Special Advocate, I think of myself as the eyes and ears for the judge. I work with teams that often include the Division of Children, Youth and Families, school staff, mental health professionals, foster care and health care providers, family service professionals and others. I attend court review sessions and speak to what I deem to be in the best interest of the children. I write a detailed report prior to each court hearing telling the judge what has happened in the case while keeping the focus on the children. I promise to see each of the children on my cases at least once a month and I commit to remain the CASA until each case closes (some cases can stay open for multiple years). If the mitigating situation has been rectified, the children might safely reunite with their biological family; if not, they might be freed for adoption.

CASA has probably done more for me than I have done for the agency in that it has allowed me to feel productive. When I walk into a home where kids five years and older still wear diapers, older kids still sleep in cribs, Mom and Dad use drugs in front of the kids, or where kids encounter domestic violence all around them and perhaps to them, I say to myself, "I can help change this situation." Then I'm thankful I've been given the opportunity to make a difference in a child's life.

I've changed since the day I took my first case eight years ago. I'm probably more tolerant than I was because I recognize everyone has a right to live their lives as they want. I can't impose my cultural values on others. My job is to ensure that the children end up in a safe, permanent home.

Two years ago my wife, Sue, and I took a Jeep ride across the United States. Yes, the country and its history impressed and thrilled me, but what struck me even more was the people -- the great diversity of people and their unbelievable helpfulness when given the chance. I realized we're all capable of being volunteers even if only in some small way. Think of what we could accomplish in this country if we all gave a bit of our time to give back to others some of the good we've received.

In Tough Times, Foundations Still Give Back

Friends of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was awarded several generous grants and contributions that will help it promote its mission of helping abused and neglected children in Washtenaw County.

The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation Clauw Family Fund donated $10,000 to the organization in hopes of providing every child in Washtenaw County a safe, permanent home. The grant is unrestricted and will be used to further the Friends of CASA mission.

The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor donated $2,000 toward CASA’s Cinderella Fund. The fund allows CASA volunteers to request modest sums to support the special needs of the children not met by standard Department of Human Services stipends. Examples of Cinderella Fund purchases in 2008 included:

A warm winter coat for a little boy
Undergarments for a teenage girl
Boots for three children fostered by a relative
Beds which allowed a relative to foster two nieces

The continuing generosity of our funders in today’s economy is a clear sign that our community values the incredibly important work we do. We are very grateful for the support of the Clauw Family Fund and the Kiwanis Club. Funders like them help bring us closer toward our goal of providing a CASA volunteer for every abused and neglected child in foster care in Washtenaw County.

Other noteworthy grantors include the Junior League of Ann Arbor with a $500 donation and the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor with a $400 donation. These two grants will go toward community outreach efforts to recruitment additional volunteer CASAs.

A CASA is a volunteer assigned to a child who regularly visits with the child and speaks with foster parents, biological parents, teachers, therapists, lawyers and caseworkers. The CASA attends court proceedings and recommends to the judge how to best help the child – they are the voice of the child.

Our advocates serve as a consistent, caring adult in a child’s life. They go to court with them; they take them to the park; they help them move from one foster home to another; they follow their progress at school, and they provide the court with a better understanding of who the child is and what he/she needs.

The Washtenaw CASA program serves as a model of government and nonprofit collaboration, and draws from the strengths of each sector to support the children who are in very unfortunate circumstances. CASA of Washtenaw County is a partnership between government, Washtenaw County Juvenile Court, and the nonprofit, Friends of CASA, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. A Look Forward

This is my first post on the CASA blog as Board Chair for Friends of CASA - an organization I am fully committed to because of it's mission to help abused and neglected children right here in Washtenaw County. That commitment to our local kids, the kids living right here in my community, attending my neighborhood schools etc. - the same kids sitting in our county family court system wishing for someone to tell their story, plead their case or simply to "know" what they think...that's why I chose this organization many years ago and am thrilled to be in the position I am for 2009, Board Chair.

When I look forward into 2009, I see more of the wonderful progress we've made in the last two years under the helm of Marianne Clauw. Thank you Marianne for your outstanding service to Friends of CASA.

Our 2009 board of directors is strongly committed to our mission and in addition, we are diverse enough to strongly represent those we are striving to serve. Our number of volunteers, our financial supporters and our public awareness is growing each year and I feel confident that these trends will continue in 2009. In growing these areas, our ability to serve more children (our ultimate goal) becomes more attainable. Every step counts, small or big.

I'm confident that the biggest impact on our progress in 2009 will be the hiring of Donna Huntsman as our Executive Director, starting February 3rd. Donna brings with her the experience and commitment we need to grow an organization of our size. Her enthusiasm, positive attitude and her simple "Cheers" at the end of her emails contributes to an energetic and upbeat office atmosphere. We are thrilled to have her on the Friends of CASA team.

In my heart and in my head, I feel that 2009 will be a fantastic year for the CASA program. I say that knowing that we are surrounded by big challenges in our economy, in our communities and even in our own homes and offices. Still, when I am reminded of the challenges these children have faced on a daily basis, often for most of their lives, I am given the perspective I need to face the challenges in my own life. I only hope that I have a portion of the resiliency and strength I see in these children. They deserve our support. I'm committed to giving it to them. I hope you join me in continuing to serve them and give them the "voice" they deserve.

CASA Year in Review: 2008

2008 was a year of commitment and growth for the CASA Washtenaw program. 40 CASA volunteers were advocates for 87 children who had been removed from their homes because of neglect or abuse. These volunteers demonstrated that commitment, persistence, and caring make an enormous difference in the lives of these children. 15 new volunteers were trained and sworn in as CASAs in 2008, continuing the growth of the Washtenaw CASA program.

The Washtenaw County Trial Court-Juvenile Division and the Friends of CASA demonstrated commitment to our government/nonprofit partnership in 2008. The two year Expansion Grant received from the National CASA organization in 2006 expired as planned in June, 2008. The Court and the Friends of CASA are pleased to report that the community outreach and fundraising efforts of the Friends of CASA have resulted in a smooth transition to local funding of the program. The Court demonstrated confidence and commitment to the partnership by including the entire program in the 2008/2009 court budget, including the continued salary grants from the Friends of CASA. This is a very significant step, as the salary grants can now be matched by the State of Michigan Child Care Fund, because CASA is a fully budgeted program.

The Friends of CASA took a major step forward in the hiring of our first permanent staff for the nonprofit. With the addition of an executive director and the continued efforts of the board of trustees, revenues increased from $32,000 in 2007 to $89,000 in 2008. Funding from local foundations and corporations increased, and the individual donor pool was doubled.

Growth in community outreach was a focus of the Court and the Friends of CASA in 2008. The community learned about the issue of child abuse and the CASA program via monthly presentations to civic groups, a University of Michigan campus outreach program, enhancement of electronic outreach through website, blogs, and videos, and the highly successful Rockin’ the CASA dinner dance and auction in November.

Thank you for your interest and commitment to helping the children we serve through the CASA program. It is the support of the community that allows the CASA volunteers to do their vital work.

Frank Vandervort - Guest Speaker at Feb. CASA Meeting

We were fortunate to have Professor Frank Vandervort as our guest speaker at our monthly CASA meeting. Vandervort is a Professor of Law; child advocate; writer and lecturer at the University of Michigan's Child Advocacy Law Clinic. He spoke to us about the Consent Decree associated with the recently settled Children's Rights Law Suit against the State of Michigan and the Department of Human Services.

Professor Vandervort provided background information on “the lawsuit” including information on the plaintiffs on whose behalf the class action suit was filed; court-ordered changes still to come and the requirements that exist for Michigan and the DHS as a result of the suit.

The lawsuit consists of 65 claims against the State and the DHS on behalf of 6 kids representing all children in the foster care system. Professor Vandervort believes the biggest impact we will see as a result of the lawsuit will be a reduction in case loads, an increase in case workers and supervisors and changes in educational requirements for personnel.

We really appreciate Professor Vandervort taking the time to join us and educate us on “the lawsuit”. At our next CASA volunteer meeting, February 23rd, we will hear from a representative from DHS regarding the changes taking place here in Washtenaw County. Hope to see you there!

Local Leaders Applaud Volunteers During January 27 Celebration

Washtenaw’s new Sheriff, Jerry Clayton, will promote the benefits of mentoring and publicly recognize local “super mentors” at a county-wide celebration in honor of National Mentoring Month on Tuesday, January 27 at the Neutral Zone in Ann Arbor.

Washtenaw Commissioners Conan Smith and Roland Sizemore, Jr., Washtenaw Administrator Bob Guenzel and Washtenaw Department of Children’s Services Director Lisa Greco will also address audience members. Clayton will present awards to the county’s 2009 “super mentors.”

The event, which is open to the public, begins at 4 pm at 310 E Washington St, Ann Arbor.

The 2009 Washtenaw Mentor of the Year is U. Ashwin Patel, who volunteers for the Washtenaw Trial Court Appointed Special Advocates Program.

“Ashwin has worked with the same family over all this time, providing a consistent thread of knowledge and caring concern while caseworkers and attorneys have come and gone,” Washtenaw CASA Program Director Ava Adler said. “Ashwin is calm, consistent and competent in all she does. She is always current in knowing what the kids need and she always brings those needs to the attention of the people responsible for meeting them.”

The case started with a 13-year-old boy and his 4- and 6-year-old stepsisters being removed from the care of their parents who suffered from serious mental problems. The girls were eventually returned to their parents care, but the boy remained in foster care and Ashwin met with him weekly. Eventually, the girls came back into foster care along with their new baby brother. Ashwin became re-involved with them, monitoring their adjustment to life in the home of relatives with whom they were placed.

A mentor is a caring, responsible, dedicated volunteer who guides a young person, helping him or her define and achieve personal goals. Mentored youth are 46% less likely to start using drugs than their un-mentored peers, according to the Child Trends Research Brief of 2004.

The Coalition is an alliance of 39 local youth-focused organizations, including schools, non-profits, government agencies and faith-based organizations. The Coalition enables its member organizations to network, share resources, save staff time and money by jointly recruiting volunteers and hosting events, and meet the Mentor Michigan Quality Standards for youth mentoring organizations.

The Coalition's website, www.washtenawmentoring.org, helps potential mentors and mentees connect via Coalition-member organizatins. Website visitors can also learn more about mentoring and its benefits, the Coalition, and upcoming youth events.

A Local CASA Success Story

Although reunification was the goal, the mother was not making progress in what she needed to do to get her children back.

The CASA volunteer assigned to the case, who has a Master's degree in social work and and previous work experience in the child welfare system, observed the mom and felt that the mom's behavior indicated depression. The CASA volunteer asked that the mom be evaluated for clinical depression.

Even though the mom's attorney was defensive towards the request, a referral was made to the reunification program, and the mom was evaluated and diagnosed for depression. With the help of mental health professionals, and a regiment of effective medication, the mom made a turn-around. She is well on her way to getting her children back!

A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock n' Roll!

On November 15, 2008, CASA held its second annual fundraiser with great success.

The stage was set as the Washtenaw County Farm Council building transformed into a beautifully-lit celebration of children, friends, music, and autumn, complete with straw bales and pumpkins.

Nearly 300 gatherers enjoyed the line dancing, BBQ, and great items in the silent auction. Most importantly, our 2nd fundraiser was a financial success, raising almost $15,000 for CASA of Washtenaw.

“In a time of uncertainty, it’s truly uplifting to see a community come together to support a cause,” says Nikki Huang, Friend of CASA’s executive director. “We had over 100 business and individuals donate to our auction, over 30 volunteers who helped make it happen, and the support of close to 300 people who turned out.”

Rockin the CASA has become the “umbrella” for Friends of CASA’s annual fundraiser. This year’s theme, “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock ‘n Roll,” featured country and rock music set to a country theme. Next year’s theme, already in the making, promises more fun and excitement. Look for an announcement and save-the-date in our next newsletter.

2008 Rock the CASA Concert

On Oct. 31, 2008, the wildly successful Rock the CASA concert was held at Mendelssohn Theatre. Rock the CASA is a variety show including performances by the best entertainment groups on the University of Michigan campus. Student performances included an array of comedians, a capella groups, bands, and dance groups. 100% of ticket sales benefit CASA of Washtenaw County.

2008 National CASA Annual Conference

Held in Washington, D.C. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel (home to the Presidential Inaugural Ball), National CASA’s 27^th annual conference brought together over 1400 CASA volunteers, staff, board members and interested parties from across the country.

Three days of workshops, exhibits, speakers and entertainment was topped off by an exciting visit to Capital Hill and an opportunity to speak directly to members of Congress and their legislative staff. There, CASA staff had the opportunity to personally acquaint their legislators with the work of CASA programs on behalf of abused and neglected children.

Ava Adler met personally with State Representative Tim Wahlberg and his legislative assistant, Jessica Van Beek along with staff from Ingham County CASA who shares his district.

Some highlights of the program included:

Alma J.Powell (wife of Colin Powell) who spoke at the opening luncheon about her work, on a national level, on behalf of youth;
Steve L Robbins, PhD., a powerful and humorous story teller who spoke to us about diversity and cultural competence; and
a fantastic performance by young people from the Duke Ellington School of Arts who put on a Motown Review that rocked!!

Workshops were organized by tracks (fundraising, public policy, volunteer skills and resources and cultural competency) and included:

“When my CASA child breaks the law-what now?” ,
“Developing a Personal Donor Cultivation Process” ,
“Opening Doors Project: Improving the Legal System’s Approach to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth in Foster Care” and
“Considerations for Transitioning Youth”.

Of course, there was also the opportunity to visit the sites in DC like the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Washington Monument where National CASA launched a dramatic exhibit which helped the public understand how many children enter our foster care system each day. For one week, National CASA staff, volunteers and supporters placed 850 life-size cutout displays of foster children on the Mall.

These displays represented the number of children who enter the foster care system each day; six versions illustrated the diversity of children in care. By the end of the week, 4,250 life-size cutouts stood on the Mall. Each held a placard with a message and a call to action. These FORGOTTEN CHILDREN cutouts may eventually tour the country and be available to display in local communities.

Next year, the national conference will be held in Denver, CO April 25-28, 2009, at the Sheraton Denver Hotel It’s theme is "Taking Advocacy to a Higher Level".

Non-Profit Gives Itself a Google Makeover

Back in May, we introduced a site called Google for Non-Profits, to showcase the tools organizations can use to raise funds and collaborate easily and efficiently. These tools, we hoped, would enable non-profits to focus less on creaky email systems or lost documents -- and more on their missions.

For at least one non-profit, this was old news. Months before we unveiled our non-profit site, Marianne Clauw, who chairs CASA Washtenaw, an organization pairing volunteers with children in the local court system -- learned about Google products through an employee in our Ann Arbor office. With a website that she now compares to a "dusty storefront" and data sitting in a "scarily unsecure, un-backed up" state, she remembers, "I could see right away that we needed to switch to Google services."

Clauw and her colleague Ferlie Yruma used Google Page Creator (now Google Sites) to develop a shiny new website, complete with a YouTube video, a Google Calendar that reflects real-time updates, and a Checkout button allowing users to donate with a few clicks of a mouse. They applied and earned a Google Grant to run free AdWords advertising. As volunteer applications and donations trickled in, they began using Gmail and Docs to streamline the way they worked internally.

Here's what they have to say about the experience:

"Non-profits are not competitive by nature,” observes Clauw. “But we live in a competitive landscape: for donors, for volunteers, for grants. What we've done with Google is a major step in being competitive.”

When CASA Washtenaw competes at a high level, Washtenaw County kids win. And for this non-profit, that's the biggest prize of all.

CASA of Washtenaw County extends a big THANK-YOU to Jan L., Anne S., and Knut S., who hosted a garden party at Jan’s home in Dexter. Jan donated a party to an American Red Cross auction, Anne and Knut bought it, and they turned it into a CASA fundraiser.

The garden was gorgeous and the friends were fabulous! Thanks for helping two local nonprofits!

That it was for children in the county in a vulnerable situation. It seems there is always an awful story in the news about foster children being further abused, and the CASA program is a way to directly help these children.

Tell us a little bit about your previous Work and/or Volunteer Experience and/or Education:

20 years as a consultant, managing large systems integration projects. Switched to the nonprofit sector in 2005 when I joined Nonprofit Enterprise at Work. Currently work as a NEW board advisor for nonprofits. I have volunteered primarily in my children’s schools and for church organizations. I’m currently a youth counselor at First United Methodist Church in Ann Arbor.

Hobbies/Fun Fact(s) about Yourself:

I love to read and garden. I’m perfectly happy digging weeds for hours at a time.

Legislation Passes U.S. House

Important legislation supporting foster youth beyond age 18 and relative guardianship has recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is looking for support in the Senate.

The issue of foster youth, especially those “aging out” of the system, has gained increased media attention of late and the bill’s passage is a giant step toward providing federal funding to states that opt to support youth in care beyond age 18.

The bill also provides federal support for relatives caring for foster children, extends IV-E support to Native American tribes and includes $50 million/year for a new Family Connection grant program. It also requires reasonable efforts be made for sibling placement and notification to relatives within 30 days of a child’s placement.

Primary funding for the Fostering Connections to Success Act would be tax dollars recovered from individuals who fraudulently collected unemployment benefits and improved cash management by the U.S. Treasury.

The provision for relative guardianship is expected to result in a cost savings by reducing caseworker oversight requirements. Please contact your legislators with “thanks” and “support.”

Detroit Google 101 Event

On June 4, 2008, CASA of Washtenaw County and NEW's npServ co-hosted an event to present live demonstrations of a range of Google applications offered free for nonprofits. CASA of Washtenaw County case studies were used to show how Google tools specifically benefit nonprofits' needs, whether it is enhanced outreach, higher productivity, or simply doing more with less. Topics such as online advertising, website enhancement and hosting, word processing and office applications, donations processing, shared calendars event ticket sales and processing, and collaborative document management were discussed during the event.

The Detroit Google training brought together 50 nonprofit representatives at Techtown, representatives who recognize the value of using free technology to improve operations of nonprofits. This is the second event hosted by CASA of Washtenaw County and NEW's npServ, an event that was also made possible by our event partners: Hannan House and NEW Detroit. The first one was held in Ann Arbor in March, 2008.

According to the audience feedback, the event was a huge success! It was evident that the techphiles and techphobes alike simply got it.

The National CASA Conference provides a unique opportunity for members of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)/ Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) programs across the U.S. to socialize, listen, and learn from each other.

The theme of the 2008 Conference is "How are the Children?" Attendees of the 2008 National CASA Conference will gain a greater understanding of their role in improving the condition of abused and neglected children and obtain tools to further advocate for permanence to stop the cycle of abuse.

In 2007, two members of our Washtenaw County CASA Program, Virginia H. and Ava A., attended the National CASA Conference at Orlando, Florida. The following excerpt talks about Virginia H.'s experience at the conference:

2007 National CASA Conference

The National Conference in 2007 was attended by representatives from several CASA programs in Michigan – about 20 persons in all. Ava A. and Gini H. attended from the Washtenaw CASA program.

The conference was held in beautiful and sunny Orlando, Florida. Of course the location offered many attractions and pleasant distractions – but the conference agenda itself offered hefty competition to the distractions.

A pre-conference day offered an in-depth focus on issues of poverty and understanding and intervening within the culture of poverty as well as community-based strategies to break the cycle of poverty – from an individual as well as a system-level perspective.

There were great workshops offered in several different tracts, designed to meet the needs and perspectives of Board Members, volunteers, staff and, in many instances, all of these perspectives. Several topics involved program issues and challenges; while others informed and challenged participants to become involved on emerging issues as well as current ‘hot topics’.

There were leadership development opportunities; tutorials on the “new” training curriculum; technical assistance available for data base applications, media and marketing strategies; and recruitment and retention.

There were also very informative sessions on heavy-weight issues such as:

Over representation of African American youth in the Child Welfare system;
Understanding the cycle of sexual abuse (focusing on both victims as well as perpetrators); when it is appropriate to – and why/ how-to pursue the termination of parental rights.
Cultural competence - making your program culturally responsive;
Reaching out to dads - developing programs of positive male role models; and
Sessions led by persons formerly in the welfare system that had the experience of a CASA having significant impact on their lives.

In addition to workshops and sessions, there were Luncheons with speakers of national importance and supportive of CASA:

Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine,
William C. Bell of the Casey Foundation;
Jonathan Kozol, author, educator and activist;
Michael Piraino, CEO of Nat’l CASA) and
Some VERY impressive and inspirational former CASA youth.

Dinners and luncheons also featured dancers and other performers from the local area. Vendors abounded with delightful and informational wares. At the end of most days, it was all one could do to make it to the pool and a pool-side repast!!

The 2008 Conference promises to offer equivalent delights unique to the Nation’s capital – as only the Capital can offer.

CASA Success Story

Biological brothers, who were split up, were able to keep in touch because their CASA volunteer was willing to drive between Detroit and Marshall for them to have contact with each other.

The CASA volunteer would bring the younger boy, who was in foster care in Marshall, down to Detroit for his orthodontist appointments (which had begun when he was in residential placement there). They would then pick up the older brother, who lived in Wyandotte, and go to dinner, the park, etc.

Why did you choose to be involved with this organization?

I have been looking for a while to find a volunteer position that gave me a chance to have hands-on experience with a neglected or abused child. When I heard about CASA in a college course, I was intrigued, and looking into it further only assured me that I had made the right choice.

Currently, I am a full time student at Eastern Michigan University majoring in Psychology with a minor in Women's Studies. I am hoping to continue my studies and eventually branch out into the non-profit world. I also spend some of my time volunteering with the Safehouse Center.

I am very interested in women and child advocacy. I am an alumnus of Delta Zeta. I am currently Hospitality Chair of National Association of Career Women. I am also involved in the Ann Arbor Coalition Against Rape.

A two year old was reunited with her biological father after the CASA volunteer was able to give the judge some perspective and feedback on exaggerated allegations of neglect that her foster mother was making about the care she got during visits with her Dad.

The child had been living with her foster mom since birth and the foster mom was having separation issues.

Washtenaw County CASA Success Story

Although reunification was the goal, the Mother was not making progress in what she needed to do to get her children back.

The CASA Volunteer assigned to the case, who has a Master's degree in Social Work and previous work experience in the child welfare system, observed the Mom and determined that the Mom was depressed. The CASA volunteer asked for an evaluation of this issue.

Even though the Mom's attorney was defensive towards the request, a referral was made to the reunification program, and the Mom was evaluated for depression. She was found to be depressed and was put on medication.

She has made a turn-around and is now making good progress towards getting her children back.

What interested you about the CASA Program?

My experiences working with Children's Advocacy have inspired me to become increasingly involved in the issues surrounding child welfare. When I heard of the opportunity to advocate for abused and neglected children, my perspectives on ethics and social justice were supported by the role of a CASA volunteer. This position to advocate and empower today's youth was an opportunity that I was immediately interested in.

Work Experience/Volunteer Experience/Education:

I am currently a senior at the University of Michigan School of Literature, Science, and the Arts. I am pre-law with a concentration in biopsychology. Throughout my time as an undergraduate, I have had the opportunity to become involved in a number of experiences that have helped to shape my interest.

This past summer, I had the opportunity of working as an Intern in the Pediatric Advocacy Clinic at the University of Michigan. This position exposed me to a number of advocacy cases that I worked on to organize and maintain for the law clinic.

I have also had the the chance to become a member of the Children's Advocacy Initiative at the University of Michigan Mott's Children's Hospital. As part of this program, I have worked to speak up for kids by communicating with legislators regarding improvements in the health and well-being of the children in Michigan.

Hobbies/Fun Fact(s) about Yourself:

I love to travel and I am currently working on becoming proficient in Spanish! I enjoy learning about different cultures and plan to someday go abroad. I also love taking pictures and going to concerts.

How did you hear about the CASA Program?

I was speaking with a friend of mine (who is also pre-law at the University of Michigan) when he mentioned I should look into CASA. We were discussing the different areas of law that we were interested in when he said that CASA seemed like it would be a great fit for me.

The Connection - A National CASA Publication

First End-of-Year Appeal: A Success!

CASA of Washtenaw County's 2007 End-of-Year Appeal was a huge success; within a month, we raised over $4500!!

We had supporters throughout Washtenaw County, Michigan, and even received donations from individuals living in California and Washington!

The appeal letters were sent out to over 700 individuals in early December, 2007, with a newsletter about Friends of CASA's progress and 2007 milestones.

We hope to send news updates throughout the year, so look out for those newsletters because we are doing such great work!

Swearing-In Ceremony, January 30, 2008

On January 30th, 2008, five (5) new CASA volunteers were sworn in at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Court by Referee Gail A.

Sara B., Diana C., Janice G., Sondra S., and Shelley S. took their oaths to carry out the duties of a CASA volunteer to the best of their ability, and received their training certificates and CASA pins.

Several experienced volunteers joined the celebration, along with a couple of family members, Nikki H. (Friends of CASA Development Director), Ava A. (CASA Coordinator), and Deborah S. (Supervisor of the CASA Program at the Court).

The new volunteers shared their reasons for becoming child advocates, and cake and coffee were enjoyed by all.

Role: Coordinator of the Washtenaw County Trial Court CASA Program

What interested you about the CASA Program?

The potential to intervene with children and stop the cycle of abuse and neglect that occurs in families over generations. It was also an opportunity to develop some new skills in administration of a Social Work program.

Tell us a little bit about your previous Work and/or Volunteer Experience and/or Education.

Bachelor's and Master's in Social Work from the University of Michigan.

I worked as a medical social worker at Mott Children's Hospital, University of Michigan Health System for many years. I did adult medical social work for a dialysis company and did Substance Abuse Therapy with women prisoners at Camp Brighton, a minimum security facility for women which has now been closed down.

I was also a therapist at The Home of New Vision, a residential treatment program in Ann Arbor for women coming from jail for substance abuse-related crimes. Believe it or not, my work with women with substance abuse issues, especially in the prison system, was some of the most rewarding I've done.

Hobbies/Fun Fact(s) about Yourself:

I'm an avid dance fan (ballet and jazz) and studied dance in my 20's and 30's (which is now a while ago!). I also love to read and exercise.

A fun fact about me is that I was at Woodstock!

What is your favorite quote of all time?

I don't know if it's my favorite of ALL time, but here's one I like:

How did you hear about the CASA Program?

I actually had not heard about it before I was approached by the director of the Juvenile Court, Linda Edwards Brown, who was a friend of mine, about the court's desire to develop and grow their CASA Program. I applied for the position of volunteer coordinator and the rest is history!

A 17 year old, who was homeless due to parental abandonment, managed to graduate high school and was offered a sports scholarship to a major public university. Due to her circumstances, she was unable to follow through on the steps necessary to pin down the scholarship.

However, with the assistance of her CASA volunteer, she applied to a community college (nearby the major public university), applied for financial aid, and located a place to live in a timely fashion so she was able to start the fall semester.

She now practices with the major public university sports team. She hopes to eventually transfer schools, and perhaps be able to take advantage of the scholarship previously offered to her.

What interested you about the CASA Program?

I grew up in the Michigan foster care system. My childhood experiences in the system has uniquely shaped my perspective on the sensitive issues that most foster children encounter. I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate working with disadvantaged youth, so when I heard about the CASA program, I wanted to find out how I could get involved.

Tell us a little bit about your current and previous work and/or volunteer experience and/or education.

I am currently a senior at the University of Michigan. I am pursuing a dual Bachelors of Arts in English and Sociology, with a sub-concentration in Social Inequality. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to volunteer with several community organizations in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area. However, one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences took placed when I volunteered at Marvin L. Winans Academy for the Fine and Performing Arts in the fall of 2006.

Hobbies/Fun Fact(s) about Yourself:

I attend Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor and I sing in one of the choirs. I am not a singer at all, but I enjoy praising God in any way that I can. I also love to shop! I am a pretty big fan of James Patterson. He is the best American suspense writer of all time.

What is your favorite quote of all time?

"Change began with the Action of One."

I am not sure who said it, but I love it!

How did you hear about the CASA Program?

I worked at the Non-Profit Enterprises at Work (NEW) during the summer of 2007. My co-workers were discussing the state of foster care in Michigan. I offered some of my insights about the subject and my co-worker told me about Friends of CASA and a bit about CASA, and the rest is history!

CASA Holiday Party, 12-20-07

An energetic and cheerful group of CASA volunteers, Friends of CASA board members, Washtenaw County CASA supervisors, and supporters gathered to share some holiday cheer and exchange some very interesting gifts!

Yummy home-cooked cookies were only topped by "re-gifted" items distributed through the white elephant gift exchange.

All started calmly until the "Winter Cactus" potted plant was opened - a real treasure - which, after receiving many "oohs and aaahhhs" was stolen/exchanged several times until the final gift was gifted. I believe the real treasure of the evening had to be the "re-gifted" pair of earrings that blinked and sparkled and required batteries!

The evening proved to be a great opportunity for a group of people who share a strong passion for serving the foster children of Washtenaw County to share some time together, get to know one another, and support our common cause.

I'm already looking forward to the 2008 CASA Holiday White Elephant Gift Exchange!

Here is a sampling of the delicious food brought in by the guests: Broccoli salad, potato salad, fresh-baked oatmeal chocolate chip and white chocolate chip cookies, and candy made of pretzels, "hugs", and M&Ms.

We exchanged gifts and played a grab bag game where each new person could "steal" gifts previously picked. Gifts included a pair of ornament earrings that light up, a black Nine West purse, a clock with picture holders, matching glasses with red trim, a pin which included a red feather in its design, and a Christmas cactus plant. The clock, the plant, and the purse exchanged hands.

Finally, party guests played a fun game called "Catch Phrase."

I thought a memorable series of moments were Nancy K. and Gini H. trying to teach the rest of [the party guests] "Catch Phrase," and the concept of tossing the game controller to the other team - sort of a hot potato concept.

We were definitely slow learners, and kept punching all the wrong buttons and messing up the game. But Gini and Nancy persevered.

What interested you in the CASA Program?

Both of my children were in abuse and neglect situations prior to their adoption. Going through the adoption process gave me a unique perspective on not only the people hurting the children, but also those trying so hard to help and the road blocks that they often must overcome in the interest of the child. The CASA program is a fantastic way of putting more resources to bat for our children.

Tell us a little bit about your previous and current work and/or volunteer experience and/or education.

I have a bachelor's degree in marketing and an MBA. My work experience encompasses over twenty years in consumer and business-to-business marketing.

I love to cook, especially as a way of dealing with stress. I can't seem to finish a book - I have four going right now.
